Investigation Discovery has set a May airdate for the special In the Line of Fire .

The program is hosted by legal analyst Rikki Klieman, who is also the wife of NYPD police commissioner Bill Bratton. The series looks at three different stories in which officers made split-second decisions to use deadly force.

The network greenlit the special in January in the wake of high-profile cases of police violence that sparked mass protests across the United States last year. Since then, a white South Carolina police officer was fired and charged with murder after a video showing him gunning down 50-year-old black man Walter Scott surfaced online.

“Across America, the headlines are fraught with cases in which police officers have abused their authority,” said Henry Schleiff, group president for Investigation Discovery and other Discovery-owned cable nets, said in a statement. “Fortunately, this is a very small percentage of cases, which more often than not overshadow the exceptional courage and kindness that a majority of the officers perform every day.”

The special gives first-person accounts of the cases of NYPD officer Ivan Marcano, who was off duty in October 2012 when he attempted to stop a robbery and was injured in a gun battle with the assailants; Maplewood, Minnesota officer Julie Olsen, who was injured in a violent altercation with a suspect in September 2009; and LAPD sergeant Hector Feliciano, who shot a hostage taker outside the Mexican consulate in Los Angeles in November 2004.

In the Line of Fire was produced by Atlas Media. Bruce David Klein executive produced alongside co-executive producers Lorri Leighton and Lisa Bryant. Thomas Cutler served as exec producer for ID.

The special will air on May 17 at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST.
